This week's battle of the 8th and 9th seeds went to Andy Hawthorne, as he defeated Jose Rojas, 11-9, 11-3, 11-3 at the World Professional Racquetball Championship in Cali, Columbia - the second event of the International Racquetball Tour's (IRT's) 2010-2011 season. Cali is at an elevation of over 3200 feet - almost 1000 meters, which may be part of the reason Rojas never seemed to settle into the match. Hawthorne, who played yesterday to qualify for the Round of 16, may have benefitted from that extra court time in getting adjusted to the altitude. Last week Rojas defeated Hawthorne in the Kansas City Pro-Am.
No other upsets happened in the 16s. For example, top seed Kane Waselenchuk easily won his match against Francisco Gomez Reyes, taking it 11-1, 11-5, 11-0.
Play can viewed via the web at IRT Network for free on Friday, which will have the rest of the Round of 16 this afternoon and then the quarter finals this evening.
