The top four men's and women's seeds all reached the semi-finals at the 2012 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Brossard, Quebec, and most of them did it with straight game victories in the quarter finals.
Two winners in two straight games were the defending champions, Mike Green of Burlington, Ont. and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg. Green defeated Lee Connell of Sasktaoon in one men's quarter final match, 15-7, 15-8, while on the women's side Saunders took out Nadia Verilli of Brossard, Que., 15-1, 15-7.
The player with the toughest time reaching the semis was men's 3rd seed Kris Odegard of Saskatoon, as he needed tie-breakers to advance against both Pedro Castro of Brossard, Que. and James Landeryou of Saskatoon, in the Round of 16 and quarter finals, respectively.
Odegard, the men's champion in 2007 and 2009, lost the first game of both those matches, but came back to win in three games, defeating Castro, 11-15, 15-8, 11-4, and Landeryou by injury default, as Landeryou suffered and knee injury in the tie-breaker of their match with the score 4-1. Landeryou had won game one 16-14, and Odegard game two 15-10.
Landeryou tried to continue, but didn't score another point and took a time out at 10-1, during which he decided he couldn't continue.
In women's action, Brandi Jacobson Prentice - formerly of Sasktaoon, now living in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. - also needed a tie-breaker to defeat Christine Richardson of Regina, winning 12-15, 15-6, 11-7.
The 2012 Canadian National Racquetball Championships continue through Saturday at the Nautilus Plus club in Brossard.
