The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) is back in action this weekend down in San Antonio, Texas with the Battle of the Alamo tournament. Of note this weekend there are several good young players in the draw, so there will likely be some upsets before the weekend is over.
Whether one of those upsets will involve Paola Longoria, the LPRT's #1 player who hasn't lost in almost two years, is anyone's guess, although we're not betting on it.
However, players like Maria Jose Vargas, Maria Paz Muñoz, Veronica Sotomayor and Frédérique Lambert will undoubtedly cause trouble for some of the other top seeds.
Vargas was a semi-finalist in the last LPRT event in Reseda, California, where Lambert lost in the Round of 16 in five games to Adrienne Fisher after she beat Jackie Paraiso in the Round of 32. Muñoz and Sotomayor reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively, of last year's US Open.
Sotomayor has the toughest draw, as she is seeded 16th, so will play top-seeded Longoria if she wins her first match with Sheryl Lotts. Muñoz plays T. J. Baumbaugh first with the winner to play veteran Cheryl Gudinas.
Vargas will play another young player Carla Muñoz (no relation to Maria Paz Muñoz) first with the winner to play 3rd seed Susana Acosta, and finally Lambert is up against Cristina Amaya and the winner of that match will play the winner of Kerri Wachtel and Liz Alvarado.
Also in the draw is Sharon Jackson, who was a double medalist - bronze in singles and gold in doubles - at the Pan American Championships last month. She faces Krystal Csuk in the Round of 32.
The action begins on Friday with the Round of 32 and Round of 16. The quarter finals and semi-finals will be on Sunday with the final to follow on Sunday. The LPRT Network webcast the action from the quarter-finals on.
