Mexicans swept the semi-finals in singles at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico, which was no surprise, as Paola Longoria and Samantha Salas, in the Women’s Singles, and Alvaro Beltran and Daniel De La Rosa, in Men’s Singles, are the top ranked players on their respective professional tours.
Longoria and Beltran are also the defending gold medalists, so Salas and De La Rosa will have their work cut out for them when they face off in the finals on Friday.
In the Women’s Singles semi-finals, Longoria defeated Ana Gabriela Martinez of Guatemalas, 15-5, 15-9, and Salas beat Cristina Amaya of Colombia, 15-7, 15-9. In the Men’s Singles semis, Beltran defeated Felipe Camacho of Costa Rica, and De La Rosa beat Alejandro Herrera of Colombia, 15-8, 15-3.
Medals for Guatemala, Colombia and Costa Rica in singles at the Central American and Caribbean Games is a new thing, as in the last two games players from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Puerto Rico, as well as Mexico, have claimed podium places in singles.
The four women in the singles semi-finals will be double medalists this year, as they are all also in the doubles semi-finals. Only Beltran can do that among the men, as he’s the only player from the singles semi that is also in the Men’s Doubles semis.
