Polo Gutierrez won the World Racquetball Tour's (WRT's) Monterrey Open in Monterrey, Mexico on the weekend. Seeded second Gutierrez defeated surprise finalist Felipe Camacho, who was the 16th seed, 15-12, 15-1, in the final.
Gutierrez beat 3rd seed Jake Bredenbeck in the semi-finals, and had to fight off a match point in doing so, as the final score line was 12-15, 15-14, 11-4. Camacho beat 13th seed, and current U16 World Junior Champion, Cristian Longoria, 15-12, 15-13, in the other semi.
Camacho and Longoria had upset wins in the quarterfinals and Round of 16. Camacho knocked off top seed Alejandro Cardona, 15-5, 15-7, in the 16s, and then 9th seed Francisco Troncoso in the quarters, 15-10, 15-8.
Longoria, meanwhile, defeated 4th seed Anthony Herrera, 15-12, 15-12, in the 16s, and then beat 5th seed Jaime Martell, 15-4, 15-11, in the quarterfinals.
Women's Open
There was a small Women's Open draw, which had some curious results. Four players - Rhonda Rajsich, Jessica Parrilla, Alexandra Herrera and Mayra Cardona Baca - competed and a round robin playoff.
Rajsich, Parrilla and Herrera tied with 2-1 records, and by the tie-breaker rule Herrera finished first, Parrilla second and Rajsich third.
Herrera beat Parrilla in two straight games, 15-13, 15-1, but lost to Rajsich, 11-15, 15-10, 11-10. Parrilla beat Rajsich in a tie-breaker, 15-9, 14-15, 11-3.
The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) will play a full tour stop in Monterrey this coming weekend, and Herrera, Parrilla and Rajsich will all be in action in that.
The WRT is also in action again this weekend with the Alamo City Open in San Antonio, Texas.
