2016 IRF World Junior Championships - Day 2 results

Monday was the second day of group stage play at the 28th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Racquetball Championships in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and the group stage will conclude on Tuesday with the group stage results used to seed players for an elimination round that begins on Wednesday.

The top seed spot will be up for grabs in Girl’s U18 singles Tuesday when Flavia Meneses of Bolivia and Erika Manilla of the USA faceoff as both have won their first two group stage matches. Monday, Meneses defeated Maria Jose Munoz of Ecuador, 15-2, 15-12, while Manilla beat Denisse Maldonado of Mexico, 15-2, 15-9. In Group B, American Jordan Cooperrider looks likely to be the 3rd seed, as she defeated Melania Sauma of Costa Rica, 15-10, 15-5, Monday, so she and Manilla would be on opposite sides of the draw if Manilla wins Tuesday.

There’s a bit of craziness in Boy’s U18 following Monday’s matches. However, top seed Cristian Longoria of Mexico looks likely to maintain that seeding for the elimination round as he won Monday, defeating Lee Gun Hee of Korea, 15-5, 15-6.

But in Group B, it’s Christian Chavez of Ecuador who has the inside track to get the 2nd seed, as Chavez beat American Kevin Vazquez, 15-10, 15-5. However, Chavez plays Canadian Trevor Webb Tuesday, and Webb defeated Carlos Medrano of Honduras, 15-2, 15-14, on Monday, although Vazquez beat Webb on Sunday. Thus, depending on Tuesday’s results, a tie-breaker rule could come into effect to determine the 2nd seed for the elimination round.

A tie-breaker situation could happen in Group C also, where the 3rd seed is up for grabs. Bolivian Cristhian Miña is in the driver’s seat after beating Alexander Pirie of Costa Rica, 15-14, 15-6, on Monday, but he’ll face Colombian Set Cubillos Tuesday, and Cubillos was winner over Mexican Victor Camacho, 2-15, 15-12, 11-5.

Wayne Antone of the USA will likely be the 4th seed, as he’s won both his games in Group D, but on Monday he just squeaked out a victory over Juan Cueva of Ecuador, winning 15-9, 13-15, 11-10.
