Amaya & Riveros in 1st ever UnitedHealthcare US Open LPRT Doubles final

Cristina Amaya and Adriana Riveros ousted top seeds Jessica Parrilla and Frédérique Lambert from the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) doubles competition Friday at the 2017 UnitedHealthcare US Open in Minneapolis, winning in three games, 15-12, 12-15, 11-5. Seeded 4th Amaya and Riveros will play 2nd seeds Paola Longoria and Gabriela Martinez, who defeated Rhonda Rajsich and Sheryl Lotts, 15-9, 15-9, in the other semi-final.

In their tie-breaker, Amaya and Riveros got on the board with the first rally, but it was nine more before they were able to score again. Slowly but surely they built up an 8-0 lead before Lambert and Parrilla were able to get on the board. But when they did score, they did so in a bunch, as they got five points on one inning in the service box.

With the score 8-5 in their favour, but without the serve, Amaya and Riveros called a timeout. They got the serve back on the next rally. Amaya and Riveros scored twice to put themselves on match point, which resulted in a timeout by Lambert and Parrilla. That was effective in breaking Amaya and Riveros's momentum, as Lambert and Parrilla won the next two rallies, the second of which was off a skip by Riveros.

However, Parrilla's serve to Amaya on the right side came back as a reverse pinch roll out from the front left corner, putting Lambert and Parrilla half down. On the next rally, Lambert was forced into skipping a shot, as the ball was driven over to the left side.

Facing match point for the third time, Lambert and Parrilla were able to fight another one off. But on their fourth match point, Riveros put the ball away with a nice backhand pinch shot. That shot put them in their first US Open LPRT Doubles final.

In Longoria and Martinez, Amaya and Riveros will face a team that has a three time US Open Champion (Longoria) and a teenager (Martinez). It will be the second time Amaya and Riveros face Longoria and a teenager in an LPRT Doubles final this season, as they went up against Longoria and Monserrat Mejia in August in San Luis Potosi, where Longoria and Mejia came out on top in two games, albeit a 15-14 second game.

Amaya and Riveros will be looking to write a different story Saturday.

The LPRT doubles final at the 2017 UnitedHealthcare US Open will be Saturday at 4 PM at the Life Time Athletic Target Center club in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.
