The Arizona Open Championships in Tempe, Arizona will feature Mixed Doubles with players from the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) and International Racquetball Tour (IRT). This is the second time they are having mixed doubles in just over three months. The last time was in Colorado, where Rodrigo Montoya and Samantha Salas won. But neither player is in the draw this time, so there won’t be a repeat winner.
Alejandro Landa and Paola Longoria are the top seeds, and will likely be a hard to beat. But with so many good teams in the draw, it's difficult to say who's going to win, which should make for an exciting event. Rounding of the top four seeds are 2nd seeds Alvaro Beltran and Natalia Mendez, 3rd seeds Gabriela Martinez and Samuel Murray and the 4th seeded brother-sister team of Andree and Jessica Parrilla.
But the quality doesn’t stop there. There’s Eduardo Portillo and Maria Renee Rodriguez who will play another strong team in Andres Acuña and Maria Jose Vargas. Ditto Cristina Amaya and Mario Mercado versus Sebastian Fernandez and Alexandra Herrera (Fernandez and Herrera were runners up to Montoya and Salas in Colorado), and Jake Bredenbeck and Kelani Lawrence versus Carla Muñoz and Alan Natera. Then there’s the brother-sister pair of Adam and Erika Manilla who play Martinez and Murray.
Finally, from the Last But Not Least Department, the husband-wife team of Daniel and Michelle De La Rosa will play Valeria Centellas and Carlos Keller right off the bat. Daniel De La Rosa and Keller were the US Open IRT finalists last month and Centellas is a reigning International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champion in Women’s Doubles. That’s a tough match to start a tournament.
This is going to be good.
The Mixed Doubles matches begin Friday. The quarterfinals will be Friday at 8 and 9 PM with the semi-finals at 2 PM Saturday. The final will be at 1:15 PM Sunday. All times are Mountain.
