The top seeds Alejandro Landa and Paola Longoria won the Pro Mixed Doubles division Sunday at the Arizona Open Racquetball Championships in Tempe, Arizona by winning a battle of #1s. Longoria is the #1 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) and she and Landa defeated Daniel De La Rosa - the #1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and his partner (and wife) Michelle De La Rosa, 15-3, 15-13.
De La Rosa had played the IRT final immediately before the Mixed Doubles final, and he lost it to Mario Mercado, so that might explain some of why the De La Rosas had a slow start against Landa and Longoria. But they did better in game two, leading by as many as six (at 11-5), and even at 13-8.
But Landa and Longoria kept at it, and tied the game at 13-13. The De La Rosas got a side out at that point, but didn’t score, giving the serve back to their opponents after Daniel skipped a shot. Landa and Longoria won the next two rallies to close out the match with the final point coming off a Longoria backhand pinch shot from deep in the court.
