Alexandra Herrera, the #3 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT), defeated the #2 player for the first time ever (on their 9th meeting) Saturday in the semi-finals of the 29th Annual Glass Court LPRT Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois, where Herrera came back from a game down to defeat Maria Jose Vargas, 10-15, 15-8, 11-6. She’ll play LPRT #1 Paola Longoria in the final, as Longoria beat 5th seed Angelica Barrios, 15-4, 15-12, in the other semi-final.
In game three of Herrera and Vargas’s semi-final match, Herrera led almost the whole way, including at 3-0 and 5-3 before Vargas tied it at 6-6. Vargas got the next point to lead 6-5. But that lead was short lived, and Vargas wouldn’t score again, as Herrera pushed on to win it 11-6.
Doubles
In the doubles final, #1 seeds Longoria and Samantha Salas were given a stiff test by 3rd seeds Valeria Centellas and Natalia Mendez in the final, but they did win in two games, 15-10, 15-10. Longoria and Salas played well, and Salas especially was strong at the end of both games. However, they held up on several occaisions - looking for an avoidable or penalty hinder call - and most of those hold ups were entirely unnecessary. Some should have been given as a point for the other side rather than calling a hinder.
The singles final will be at noon on Sunday. Look for the action via the LPRT YouTube channel, as well as the LPRT Facebook page.
