Rodrigo Montoya of Mexico, the defending International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Men’s Singles World Champion in Men’s Singles, lost his first match in the group stage on Monday to Costa Rican Andres Acuña, 15-5, 15-4, in Group B. The win gives Acuña a good chance to win the group, and claim the #2 seed for the medal round providing he defeats Shai Manzuri of Argentina on Tuesday.

Juan Francisco Cueva of Ecuador almost had another big upset, as he won game one versus American Jake Bredenbeck, 15-11. But Bredenbeck came back in game two winning it 15-2, and then took the tie-breaker 11-2 to prevent the big upset.
The rest of the matches went pretty much according to expectations, except those in Group G. Pedro Castro of Chile had to forfeit his match due to injury, despite winning game one, 15-12, and being up 8-1 in game two against Martinez. Also, Bolivian Luis Aguilar came back from a game down to defeat Set Cubillos of Colombia, 10-15, 15-13, 11-1.
In Women’s Singles, Angelica Barrios of Bolivia upset Mexican Samantha Salas, 15-4, 15-12, in Group C. In Group B, American Kelani Lawrence almost had an upset, as she won the first game versus Maria Jose Vargas of Argentina. But Vargas rallied to win 11-15, 15-7, 11-5.
In Group D, Argentine Natalia Mendez of Argentina defeated American veteran Rhonda Rajsich, 15-10, 15-11, while Colombian Cristina Amaya beat Ireland's Aisling Hickey in two straight games.
No live streaming of matches yet, so it seems that won’t happen until the medal round, which will begin on Thursday. Check with the IRF website or their social media outlets (IRF on Facebook and @IRFRacquetball on Twitter) for updates.
