2022 IRT New York Open - Preview

The International Racquetball Tour’s (IRT’s) New York Open starts Thursday in Wantagh, New York with two rounds of qualifying matches. Forty seven players are in the draw, including the top 7 ranked players and 12 of the top 15. Daniel De La Rosa, IRT #1, leads the way coming off a win at the IRT SoCal Open last month. He’s joined by IRT #2 Andree Parrilla, #3 Samuel Murray and #4 Alejandro Landa.

Former #1 Kane Waselenchuk is also in the draw as the 7th seed, but veterans Rocky Carson and Alvaro Beltran are absent.

Perhaps the most interesting potential match in qualifying will be in round two, as Mexican Alejandro Cardona could face Canadian Coby Iwaasa in what would be a rematch of the World Racquetball Tour 2014 Fall Brawl final, when Iwaasa came back from a game down to beat Cardona and claim his first and so far only pro tour title. Since then neither Cardona or Iwaasa has played much on the IRT, though Cardona did play at last month’s IRT SoCal Open, and Iwaasa competed at last month’s Pan American Championships, winning Men’s Doubles with Samuel Murray.

You can see the 2022 New York Open matches via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. Play begins Thursday with two rounds of action. Then they’ll play the Round of 32 Friday morning, and Round of 16 Friday afternoon and evening beginning at 4 PM. The quarterfinals will start at 10 AM Saturday morning with the semi-finals at 7 and 8 Saturday night. The final will be at noon Sunday. All times Eastern.
