The 36th Annual Lewis Pro-Am is a Tier 1 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event for the first time, and although there's a small draw, players are clearly happy to be there. Also, the tournament features a small doubles competition, which will have IRT President and former #1 player Jason Mannino competing for the first time in a few years. He's teamed up with the current IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk, and they are seeded 3rd in the draw.
In the singles draw, there are a few good match ups early on, including Jansen Allen and Andy Hawthorne, Marco Rojas and Alejandro Landa and Tony Carson - making his return to the tour after missing some events do to injury - versus Charlie Pratt. Also, Japanese veteran, Hiroshi Shimizu, who almost knocked off Alvaro Beltran at the California Open, will likely play Chris Crowther in the Round of 16.
The tournament will have the first singles round (Round of 32) on Friday morning wit the Round of 16 on Friday afternoon. The quarter finals and semi-finals will both be on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
This is the format that is used by the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT), and our understanding is that some players favour that formatting rather than all the qualifying on Thursday night, when a player can play two or three times almost back to back and then have to play again at 10 AM Friday morning. That's a tough schedule for anyone.
The IRT Network will carry the action live over the web beginning Friday morning at 11:45 AM CST.
