The Round of 16 at the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) West Coast Championships in Concord, California has yielded some upsets, but nothing too surprising. Jaime Martell, the 4th seed, was the highest seed to lose, but that was at the hands of 2015 Pan American Champion Jose Diaz, 12-15, 15-12, 11-5, so a tough match for Martell.
Sixth seed Jake Bredenbeck also fell in his first time out since injuring his right shoulder at last year’s US Open, but we understand that Bredenbeck is playing left-handed, so his loss to 11th seed Miguel Rodriguez Jr., 15-4, 15-3, isn’t so surprising. Also unsurprising is 10th seed Alejandro Landa’s win over 7th seed Gerardo Franco, 13-15, 15-11, 11-6, as Landa is a multiple WRT tournament winner, who hasn’t played many WRT events recently, which accounts for his lower ranking.
Maybe a bit surprising was 3rd Andree Parrilla’s win over Felipe Camacho, 15-3, 15-7. Camacho’s a solid player, who has represented Costa Rica several times internationally, so we would have thought the scores would be closer.
Two upsets in the doubles draw, as 9th seeds Camacho and Landa defeated 1st seeds Bredenbeck and David Horn, 15-11, 8-15, 11-0, in the quarterfinals, and will play 4th seeds Alejandro Cardona and Freddy Flores in the semi-finals, as Cardona and Flores beat 5th seeds Luis Alvia and Francisco Troncoso, 15-2, 15-13.
Also, 6th seeds Gerardo Franco and Mauro Rojas knocked off 3rd seeds Christian Longoria and Jaime Martell, 7-15, 15-12, 11-3, compounding Martell’s loss in singles. Franco and Rojas will play 2nd seeds Parrilla and Rodrigo Montoya, who were winners over 7th seeds Danny Lavely and Mauricio Zelada, 15-10, 15-10.
The singles quarterfinals begin Saturday morning at 9 AM PST from Concord, and you can watch the action live via the WRT website.
