Alejandro Cardona reaffirmed his position as the #1 player on the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) Sunday by winning the WRT West Coast Championships in Concord, California. Cardona defeated Alejandro Landa, 15-10, 15-10, in the final.
Landa had a second chance at a title, as he and Felipe Camacho were in the WRT Doubles final, but they lost to Rodrigo Montoya and Andree Parrilla, 15-10, 15-11. Montoya and Parrilla were generally in control throughout the match. One of their strategies was to have Montoya lob serve into the middle, slightly over to Camacho, playing the right side, so Camacho returned most of those serves. it was an effective strategy, and their cause was helped by Parrilla’s hot shooting, who didn’t miss many shots.
Over the last eight WRT events six different players have won. Cardona is one of the two double winners over that span (Rodrigo Montoya is the other).
The next WRT event is the Mt Rainier Open in Seattle, Washington, February 17-19.
