Kane Waselenchuk continued towards his goal of being the #1 racquetball player in the world Sunday, as he defeated current #1 Rocky Carson in final of the Florida Spring Break tournament in Sarasota, a Tier 1 event on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT). Waselenchuk wants to regain the position that was his at the end of the 2003-04, 2004-05, and 2005-06 seasons.
In Sarasota, Waselenchuk defeated Carson in three straight games, 11-8, 11-(-1), 13-11. After falling behind by a wide margin in game two, Carson was charged with a technical, resulting a loss of a point and the negative score.
Waselenchuk's now won four tournaments in a row, and eight of the nine he's entered. He's only lost one match all season. Only Carson with two and Jack Huczek with one have won a Tier 1 IRT event this season.
This win may be enough to move Waselenchuk up to second from third on the IRT rankings, passing Huczek, who lost to Waselenchuk in a five game semi-final match on Saturday.
There are two remaining main IRT events this season. The Dennis Rosenberg Pro-Am will be April 23-26 in Allentown, Penn., Tier 1 event, and then the season will end with a Grand Slam event: the Motorola IRT Pro Nationals in Chicago May 5-9.
