On the weekend, Mitch Williams was a double winner at 3rd Annual Carl Myers Racquetball Tournament in Garden City, Kansas, which is a Tier 2 event on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) as he won both singles and doubles with partner Ben Croft.
Williams was seeded third, but defeated Croft, the second seed, in the semi-finals, 11-3, 14-12, 0-11, 11-3, and then in the final took out the top seed Shane Vanderson in three straight games, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4. Vanderson got to the final by beating Jason Thoerner, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5.
In doubles, Williams and Croft defeated Vanderson and Thoerner.
Meanwhile, at the Leamington Racquetball Classic - a Tier 4 IRT event in Leamington, Ontario, second seed Eric Desrochers defeated top seed Brian Simpson in three straight games, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5. But Desrochers had a more difficult time in the semis, as he needed five games to finish off a pesky Jason Reaume, 11-6, 11-4, 6-11, 8-11, 11-4, while Simpson defeated Anthony Barraco in three straight games, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5.
This Week
Coming up this week is the the Florida Spring Break event, the third last major event (Tier 1 or Grand Slam) of the IRT season. There are 31 players in the qualifying draw, including regulars Chris Crowther, Andy Hawthorne, and Travis Woodbury, as well as international players Mike Green and Jorge Hirsekorn, and all four Herreras: Alejandro, Andres, Anthony and Juan.
