WPRO - In Shape Sports, Stockton, California - Preview

The official draw for the In Shape Sports Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) Championships in Stockton, California, the penultimate event of the WPRO season, has been released and it's only a bit different from what we had for you a couple of days ago.

World Champion doubles partners Aimee Ruiz and Jackie Paraiso are playing each other in the first round. They are also in women's pro doubles together as the top seeds. That's an interesting event with two good international doubles teams: Paola Longoria and Samantha Salas from Mexico and Canadians Brandi Jacobson Prentice and Jennifer Saunders.

The Canadians are seeded 5th and will play Adrienne Fisher and Krystal Csuk, the 4th seeds, for a spot in the semis, where the winners will likely face Paraiso and Ruiz.

The singles schedule is set for two rounds on Friday, two on Saturday and then the final on Sunday. Doubles will begin on Saturday, and there are three rounds to play that day with the final on Sunday.

Thus, some players will have played quite a bit of racquetball come Saturday night. To come out victorious this weekend, you'll really need to be "In Shape".

2010 IRT Mexico Open - Waselenchuk finishes season undefeated

Kane Waselenchuk has finished the 2009-2010 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) undefeated, as he beat Ben Croft, 11-2, 11-3, 11-1, at the Mexico Open - last tournament of the season - in Tijuana. He finishes as the #1 IRT player for the 5th time in his career. In fact, Waselenchuk's win loss record for games this season was an astounding 102-3. A 97% success rate.

Waselenchuk said he wanted "this to be my best match of the season, and I didn't miss much." Indeed, he didn't as he only allowed Croft 6 points over three games.

Despite the loss, Croft finished the season well, reaching the finals of a Tier 1 IRT event for the first time in his career. He said "I didn't play as well as I wanted in the final, but there were three positives before that," as Croft beat Javier Moreno, Rocky Carson and Alvaro Beltran en route to the final.

Croft began the season late, as he was suspended for the first three events due to unsportsmanlike behavior at last season's year end event. He said that he learned from that penalty, and it made him want to play even more.

The success he had over the rest of the season "meant a lot" to Croft, who's "excited for the summer to train" and prepare for what one can only expect will be even better things from him.

Croft is one of 5 players who have been multiple World Junior Champions at 18 and under. Three of those players have been #1 on the IRT: Sudsy Monchik, Rocky Carson and Jack Huczek, so that and his current form bode well for Croft's future.

2010 IRT Mexico Open - Semi Finals

Ben Croft has the unenviable task of preventing Kane Waselenchuk from a perfect season, as they will meet in the finals of the Mexico Open in Tijuana on Sunday. Croft is in the finals for the first time this season, while Waselenchuk has won 7 of the 8 Tier 1 and Grand Slam events on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) this season. He missed one tournament due to illness.

Croft has already ended the dreams of two players in Tijuana, as he defeated Alvaro Beltran in the semi-finals, 13-11, 11-4, 11-4. Beltran was playing his first competitive racquetball tournament since last summer, because he was injured in pre-season training last August. It would have been a dream for Beltran to win a tournament in his first event after his injury. Sadly for Beltran, that's not to be.

In the quarter finals on Friday, Croft defeated Rocky Carson and thus likely ended Carson's dreams of finishing as the #2 IRT player this season.

Waselenchuk reached the final by defeating Chris Crowther, who was playing in his first career semi-final on Saturday, 11-7-11-4, 11-2.

The final is set for noon pacific time, and it's available over the web at IRTNetwork.com on Saturday.

2010 IRT Mexico Open - Quarter Finals

Chris Crowther has made the semi-finals of a Tier 1 event on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) for the first time in his career as he defeated Shane Vanderson, 11-1, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, in the quarter finals of the Mexico Open in Tijuana.

Crowther's semi-final opponent will be top seed Kane Waselenchuk who is aiming for an undefeated season. He continued toward that goal on Friday with a victory over Andy Hawthorne in the quarters, 11-3, 11-1, 11-5.

Ben Croft ended Rocky Carson's hope to finish 2nd at the end of the 2009-10 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) season, as Croft upset Carson in the quarter finals, 11-1, 4-11, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10.

Carson trailed Jack Huczek by over 200 points in the rankings prior to this weekend. Huczek did not travel to Tijuana, because he's still suffering the effects of his right leg injury. Nonetheless, it's probably unlikely that Carson will gain enough points from a quarter final finish to overtake Huczek.

Alvaro Beltran will be Croft's opponent in the semi-finals on Saturday, as he defeated Mitch Williams when Williams had to retire due to cramping at 4-4 in the fifth game of their match, making the scoreline 11-13, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7, 4-4 retired. Beltran's victory and overall performance is all the more impressive in light of his playing his first competitive matches since last summer's World Games.

The semi-finals are available over the web at IRTNetwork.com on Saturday. The first semi-final is scheduled for 4 PM Pacific with the second to go at 5 PM Pacific.

2010 World Juniors to be in Los Angeles in November

The International Racquetball Federation (IRF) has announced their decision to move the Junior World Championships from December to Noevember. IRF Secretary General Luke St Onge cited the high cost of airfare in the pre-Christmas period as one of the reasons for the change.

Thus, the 2010 World Junior Racquetball Championships will be from November 15 to 20 in Los Angeles, California at the Spectrum Club, which is a 20 court venue. This marks a return to California for World Juniors, which were held in Fountain Valley, California from 1995 to 2000.

2010 IRT Mexico Open - Huczek out, Beltran in

The 2009-10 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) comes to a close this weekend with its last Tier 1 event: the Mexico Open in Tijuana. Kane Waslenchuk is in the draw, and will try to complete an undefeated season. His last loss came in January 2009 against Alvaro Beltran.

In a surprise move, Beltran will be playing in Tijuana, which will be his first competition since last season, as he hurt himself in pre-season training with Chris Crowther last August.

However, Jack Huczek is not playing the Mexico Open, because his leg injury continues to bother him, so Huczezk is not able to perform his best and is giving Tijuana a pass. Huczek likely hopes to be ready for the USA National Singles Championship next month, as that will be his last chance to get a place on Team USA for this summer's World Championships. He missed the US doubles championships because of his current injury.

Potential matches we'd like to see include Beltran versus Jason Mannino in what is Mannino's last IRT tournament, and Ben Croft versus Mexican lefty Javier Moreno (though Moreno first has to get by Mike Orr), and finally Canadian champion Kris Odegard against Andy Hawthorne.

There's also an all Herrera battle with Anthony against Andres in qualifying with the winner to face 2nd seed Rocky Carson.

The Qualifying Round goes Thursday with the Round of 16 and quarter finals on Friday. Friday's action can be viewed available for free over the web at IRTNetwork.com with the semi-finals and final available on Saturday and Sunday for a small fee.

IRT Rankings - April 1, 2010

Kane Waslenechuk continues to top the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) rankings, and the rest of the top 10 remain unchanged with Jack Huczek and Rocky Carson in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. But they're separated by only a little over 200 points, so if Carson does better than Huczek this weekend at the Mexico Open he may be able to overtake Huczek and finish the season as #2.

Jose Rojas has broken into the top 20 for the first time and done so in a big way, as he's ranked 11th now, up from 23rd in the February 11th rankings.

Also making significant moves up are Charlie Pratt is also up to 13th from 17th, veteran Hiroshi Shimizu up to 16 from 19, and back in the top 20 is Alejandro Herrera, who's 18th up from 21st.

IRT players have one last big chance to change their ranking this weekend with Mexico Open, the last Tier 1 event of the season in Tijuana.

2010 Miller Lite Open - Finals

Paola Longoria will face Cheryl Gudinas in the final of the Miller Lite Open in York, Pennsylvania, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-3, to win her fourth tournament in a row on the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) tour. Longoria was also the gold medalist earlier this month in Honduras at the Pan Am Championships.

In short, she's on a roll, and should be considered the favorite to win the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships in August in Korea. If Longoria does so, she'll be the first Mexican woman to take that title.

Sunday was the first WPRO final this season that did not have Rhonda Rajsich and Longoria since September, when Rajsich defeated Kerri Wachtel to win the Ektelon Texas Open.

The next WPRO event comes in a fortnight with the In Shape Sport WPRO Racquetball Championships in Stockton, California April 22-25.

2010 Miller Lite Open - Semi-finals

Cheryl Gudinas has reached the final of a Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) Tier 1 event for the first time this season, as she defeated Rhonda Rajsich in the semi-finals of the Miller Lite Open in York, Pennsylvania. Gudinas got the win after falling behind two games to none, but mental toughness has got her many victories in her long career and did so again as she came back to win 7-11, 5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5.

Paola Longoria will face Gudinas in the final Sunday, as she defeated Adrienne Fisher in the other semi-final, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5.

Gudinas's victory over Rajsich should mean that regardless of Sunday's outcome Longoria will retain the #1 ranking ahead of Rajsich. Rajsich will have two more opportunities to overtake Longoria and finish the season #1.

The two remaining WPRO events this season are the In Shape Sport WPRO Racquetball Championships in Stockton, California April 22-25 and the WPRO Ektelon World Championships in New Orleans, May 6-9.

2010 Miller Lite Open - Round of 16

Only one surprise at the Miller Lite Open in York, Pennsylvania on the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO), as 11th seed Aubrey O'brien came back from two games down to defeat 6th seed T. J. Baumbaugh, 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 and book a place in the quarter finals against 3rd seed Cheryl Gudinas.

Gudinas defeated Anita Maldonado, 11-3, 11-0, 11-6, in the Round of 16.

Although Jennifer Saunders, currently the 11th ranked WPRO player, is not in York, she was still in the draw, so the WPRO must have felt it was too late to redo the draw without her. Keely Franks was the beneficiary, as she advanced to the quarters without lifting her racquet.

But in the quarters, Franks will face top seed Paola Longoria in the quarters. Longoria defeated Karen Morton, 11-2, 11-3, 11-2, in the Round of 16.

2010 Miller Lite Open - PREVIEW

The Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) is back in action this weekend with the Miller Lite Open in York, Pennsylvania. Top seed Paola Longoria, fresh off her gold medal performance last week at the Pan American Championships in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, could face her toughest Round of 16 opponent this season as we believe current US Nationals champion Aimee Ruiz plays into Longoria.

The Racquetball Blog has done up an unofficial draw based on the latest WPRO rankings, and the knowledge that Jennifer Saunders, currently the 11th ranked WPRO player, will miss the Miller Lite event as she's tweaked her back. Saunders doesn't expect the injury to keep her out of action more than a week, so she should be in the next WPRO event, the In Shape Sport WPRO Racquetball Championships in Stockton, California April 22-25.

The Miller Lite Open is also a Tier 4 event on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) with Ben Croft and Andy Hawthorne as the first and second seeds, respectively, in a field of 22 players.

2010 Pan American Championships - Monroy closes the deal

Ricardo Monroy became the 1st Bolivian to capture the men's singles title at the Pan American Championships Saturday as he defeated Polo Gutierrez (Mexico) in the final, 15-11, 15-7, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, at the 23rd Pan American Championships. In fact, Monroy is the first Bolivian to reach the final.

It was a magical tournament for Monroy, as he defeated 4th seed Vincent Gagnon, 1st seed Gil De Los Rios and then 2nd seed Gutierrez en route to the title. Moreover, those three victories were each in two straight games.

For Gutierrez, he seems destined to be a Pan Am bridesmaid but not the Pan Am bride as he was runner up for the third year in a row. Mexican Alvaro Beltran defeated Gutierrez in each of last two years. Beltran missed this tournament as he's still recovering from a knee injury that has prevented him from playing at all this season.

On the women's side, Paola Longoria of Mexico won women's singles by defeating Jennifer Saunders of Canada in Saturday's final, 15-10, 15-11. It's Longoria's third Pan Am title, as she previously won it in 2008 and 2006. For Saunders, it's her first international final in singles since the 2002 World Championships, which she lost to American Cheryl Gudinas.

Mexico also beat Canada in women's doubles, as Samantha Salas Solis and Susana Acosta-Mendoza defeated Frédérique Lambert and Geneviève Brodeur, 15-11, 15-4.

But the Canadians won gold in men's doubles, as Mike Green and Tim Landeryou defeated the Mexican team of Ruben Estrada and Alejandro Landa, 15-9, 12-15, 11-9. It's Landeryou's first gold medal for Canada in his first international appearance on Team Canada, and Green's second gold at the Pan Am Championships. Green won singles at the 1999 Pan Ams.

Overall, it's the third time Canada has won gold at this event in men's doubles. Vincent Gagnon and Francois Viens won it in 2006, and Mike Ceresia and Roger Harripersad were gold medalists back in 1992 when this event was called the Tournament of the Americas.

2010 Pan American Championships - Monroy surprise finalist

Bolivian Ricardo Monroy upset top seed Gil De Los Rios of Mexico in the semi-finals in San Pedro Sula, Honduras at the 23rd Pan American Championships. He'll face 2nd seed Polo Gutierrez of Mexico in the final, who defeated Canadian Kris Odegard, 15-3, 15-5 in the other semi-final on Friday.

In women's singles, #1 seed Paola Longoria ended the return of Claudine Garcia (Dominican Republic) with a decisive win, 15-1, 15-9. That sets up a gold medal show down with the #2 seed Jennifer Saunders of Canada who beat Longoria's team mate Nancy Enriquez (Mexico), 15-12, 15-11.

In doubles, the stage is set for two Mexican-Canadian playoffs. On the women's side, the #1 seeded Mexicans Samantha Salas Solis and Susana Acosta-Mendoza got a default victory over Columbians Carolina Gomez and Cristina Amaya (Columbia) and the 2nd seeded Canadians Frédérique Lambert and Geneviève Brodeur defeated Claudine Garcia and Yira Portes of the Dominican Republic, 15-2, 15-4.

In men's play, Mexicans Ruben Estrada and Alejandro Landa squeaked out the first game of their match with Bolivians Ricardo Monroy and Carlos Keller Vargas, and then took a 6-0 lead in the second game and carried through to win the match, 15-14, 15-7.

Canadians Mike Green and Tim Landeryou needed a tie-breaker to beat the Columbian team of Andres Herrera and Francisco Gomez of Columbia, 15-5, 14-15, 11-1. The Canadians served everything to Gomez, who was playing the right side. Early they were serving lobs, but in the tie-breaker they switched to hitting drive z serves.

The top seeds - Mexicans Paola Longoria and Gil De Los Rios - advanced to the semi-finals by winning their matches in two straight games. Longoria defeated Cristina Cordova of Ecuador, 15-3, 15-3, while De Los Rios beat Fernando Rios of Ecuador, 15-10, 15-7.

It was a doubly good day for Garcia, who also won in women's doubles with her partner Yira Portes as the Dominican Republicans defeated Cristina Cordova and Maria Paz Munoz (Ecuador), 15-12, 15-6, in the quarter finals. Next up for them will be the Canadian team of Frédérique Lambert and Geneviève Brodeur, and the Canadians defeated the Guatemalan team of Lucy Zachrisson and Marie Gomar, 15-4, 15-10.
