Kane Waselenchuk defeated Rocky Carson in the final of the Racquet House San Diego Pro-Am tournament, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5, to win his 17th consecutive tournament on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT). Waselenchuk hasn't lost since Jauary 2009.
On Sunday, Carson came out firing and had a big lead in game one, just as Jack Huczek did on Saturday against Waselenchuk in their semi-final match. But unlike Huczek, Carson couldn't withstand Waselenchuk's comeback, and lost game one, 11-9.
Game two was not close, as Waselenchuk built a comfortable 8-1 lead and went on to win 11-4. In game three, they were tied at 3-3, but again Waselenchuk went on a run to make the score 10-3. To his credit Carson didn't give up and clawed back a couple of points before Waselenchuk ended it at 11-5.
The next IRT tournament is the US Open, racquetball's most prestigious professional event, which will begin October 20 in Minneapolis. Waselenchuk's the two time defending champion and has won 5 US Opens in his career.
Given his current form, you'd have to think that three weeks from now Waselenchuk will be hoisting the US Open trophy for the 6th time.
