IRT Fresno Summer Kickoff - Quarterfinals

Fifth seed Marco Rojas upset 4th seed Daniel De La Rosa, 11-3, 11-9, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the Fresno Summer Kickoff in Fresno, California - the last International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event of the season. It’s the third time the two have met on tour, and Rojas has won all three. In fact, Rojas’s first IRT match was against De La Rosa back in 2010 in San Diego.

Rojas will play IRT #1 Rocky Carson in the semi-finals Saturday morning, as Carson defeated Jansen Allen, 11-2, 11-5, 7-11, 11-3, in the quarters. Rojas played Carson nine times on tour, and lost all nine.

Second seed Kane Waselenchuk beat Rojas’s brother, Jose, in straight games, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5, although Jose Rojas had a big lead in game two, at 9-5, and even led 10-8. It looked like the match would go at least four games, but Waselenchuk, who’s on a mission to reclaim the #1 ranking, came back, aided by two late serve return errors by Rojas that gave Waselenchuk his first game point. But at that point, Rojas hit a winning return to regain serve.

However, Rojas wasn’t able to pull out game two, and in game three he went down 7-1 to Waselenchuk, and the writing was on the wall.

Third seed Alvaro Beltran will be Waselenchuk’s opponent in the semis, as he defeated Charlie Pratt, 11-1, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4.
