The day after the biggest win of his career Shane Vanderson offered little resistence against Rocky Carson in the semi-finals of the IRTNetwork.com Open, as Carson won 11-5, 11-2, 11-1. The win puts Carson into the finals for the second straight Tier 1 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) tournament.
Carson primarily used his z serve to the left side - Vanderson's backhand, but did change it up with some lobs and half lobs. Vanderson served lobs for almost the entire match except for the end of game two and early in game three. The drive did get Vanderson a point in game two, but he faulted three times with it in game three before going back to the lob.
Carson will play Kane Waselenchuk, who defeated Jason Mannino in the other semi-final, 11-3, 11-2, 11-3. If the games had been to 1, then Mannino would have won three straight. But they play to 1 + 10, and for most of the games Waselenchuk was lights out, including making a sliding dive to win game two and a flat pinch shot to the right corner as he turned around in the back left corner.
That is to say, Waselenchuk played like Waselenchuk, the #1 player on the IRT.
Sunday's final will be a repeat of the Florida Spring Break final from two weeks ago, when Carson put up a strong fight against Waselenchuk before losing 3 games to 1.
The final is scheduled for noon on Sunday and can be viewed over the web at IRTNetwork.com.
