The 24th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Racquetball Championships in Canoga Park, California finished the preliminary round on Tuesday. The elimination round begins Wednesday. Here's a review of what happened on Tuesday.
In Boy's U18, Americans Marco Rojas and Jose Diaz continued to do well, winning their matches on Tuesday. Rojas defeated Bolivian Esteban Reque of Bolivia, 15-3, 15-7, and Diaz beat Canadian Ashton Duda, 15-4, 15-4.
The other interesting result in Boy's U18 is Bolivian Fabian Gutierrez losing both his matches, as he was seeded #2. On Tuesday, Gutierrez lost to Sebastian France of Colombia, 15-4, 15-12.
In Girl's U18, Canadian Brittany Nelson is in a similar spot to Gutierrez, as she was seeded #1 but lost again on Tuesday, as American Samantha Simmons beat her 15-7, 15-10.
In one of the closest matches on Tuesday, last year's silver medalist in Girl's U18 Maria Jose Vargas of Bolivia won a tie-breaker against Alexandra Herrera of Mexico, 14-15, 15-0, 11-10.
Also in Girl's U18, Adriana Riveros of Bolivia defeated Mexican Paloma Martinez, 15-5, 15-4, to win Group B.
In Boy's U16, #1 seed Mexican Francisco Javier Mar Garcia defeated Luciano Garcia of Nicaragua, 15-13, 15-2, in Group A. In Group B, Andres Acuña of Costa Rica beat Diego Pimentel of the Dominican Republic, 13-15, 15-0, 11-2.
In Girl's U16, in Group D, American Katilin Simmons defeated Andrea Martinez of Guatemala, 15-5, 15-11, to win the group, as they both won two matches and lost one.
The elimination round begins Wednesday leading to the finals on Saturday. There is live streaming of some of the matches from California via the IRF website.
