Two upsets in the finals of the #1 spots in both Men's and Women's singles at the 2014 USA Racquetball Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C., as Nick Montalbano (Colorado State, Pueblo) and Amanda Lindsay (Oregon State) both lost their respective finals.
Montalbano finished runner up for a second consecutive year, as he lost to 2nd seed Jose Diaz of Delta College, 15-14, 6-15, 11-7, in Men's #1 singles. Montalbano got more points than Diaz, but did not win more games.
Adam Manilla of Colorado State beat Joel Barshaw of Oregon State, 15-11, 15-14, in the 3rd place match.
On women's side, 3rd seed Devon Pimentelli (Canada College) beat Lindsay in the final in two straight games, 15-7, 15-5. Pimentelli had defeated 2nd seed Samantha Simmons (Maryland) in the semis, so took out both top seeds to claim the title. Simmons claimed 3rd place by defeating her sister Elizabeth Simmons (Arizona), 13-15, 15-14, 11-3.
In Men's #1 doubles, it was a battle of two lefty-righty teams from Colorado with Felipe Camacho and Brad Schopieray of Colorado State, Pueblo coming out on top of Adam Manilla and Nick Riffel of Colorado State, 12-15, 15-3, 11-0.
Third Place went to Joel Bradshow and Sam Reid of Oregon State as they beat Danny Sardina and Zachary Patterson of Arizona State, "15-8, 15-13, 13-0" [sic].
Lindsay was trying for gold in Women's #1 doubles also, but she and team-mate Karissa Beatty of Oregon State lost to Elizabeth Simmons and Lindsay Rasmussen of Arizona, 15-10, 15-11. Anna Schwartz and Rachel Schmidt (Missouri) defeated Adrienne Schneider and Sara Moulton (Brigham Young), 11-15, 15-9, 11-6.
