A couple of significant upsets in the quarterfinals of Men's and Women's Singles at the 2015 USA Racquetball Intercollegiate Championships at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
The largest upset happened in Women's Singles, as 19th seed Hannah Shnurman of Northern Colorado is into the semi-finals after defeating 6th seed Jordan Cesak (Texas) in the quarters, 15-13, 9-15, 11-2. Shnurman earlier defeated 3rd seed Katie Niewiadomy of Texas A & M. She'll play 2nd seed - and 2013 Women's Singles Champion - Kelani Bailey of Shenandoah University in the semis Friday, as Bailey beat Melissa King of Missouri, 15-2, 15-2, in the quarters.
Also, 5th Rachel Creel (Oregon State) got the better of 4th seed Anna Schwartz (Missouri), 3-15, 15-14, 11-6. Creel will be up against top seed Elizabeth Simmons (Arizona) in the semi-finals, as Simmons defeated 9th seed Sara Moulton, 15-8, 15-4, in the quarters.
In Men's Singles, Dylan Reid of Washington University, the 10th seed, took out 2nd seed Joel Barshaw (Oregon State) in the quarters, 15-12, 15-4. He'll have his work cut out for him in the semi-finals, however, as Reid faces 3rd seed Marco Rojas - the 8th ranked player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT). Rojas defeated Cole Burr (Western University), 15-1, 15-6, in the quarters.
The top of the men's draw went according to form with top seed Adam Manilla (University of Colorado - Boulder) defeating Zachary Patterson (Arizona State), 15-5, 15-5, and 4th seed Brad Schopieray (Colorado State) beating Thomas Carter (Baldwin Wallace), 15-8, 15-6, to set up an all lefty semi-final, and guarantee that one of finalists will be left-handed.
