The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) has gone west for the California State Singles Championships in Fountain Valley, California that begins Friday. Nineteen players are vying for the title this weekend. LPRT #2 Maria Jose Vargas will be trying to win back to back tournaments for the first time in her career. She’s won twice on tour this season, but neither win has come versus LPRT #1 Paola Longoria, who will be trying to win her seventh title of the season in Fountain Valley.
Longoria has lost twice this season, which is twice more than she had in previous three seasons combined. One loss came to LPRT #3 Rhonda Rajsich in the final of the Stockton event in October, while the other was earlier this month in New Jersey, where LPRT #5 Frédérique Lambert beat her in the semi-finals. Vargas then got the better of Lambert in the final.
Thus, it will be interesting to see what happens this weekend. Will Longoria win again? Will Vargas win back to back events, even if she has to play Longoria in the final? Will Rajsich come through and win again, or could another player - Lambert, Samantha Salas, Cristina Amaya - make a break through and win for the first time this season? (for Lambert and Amaya, it would be a career first).
The action starts Friday morning. Matches can be viewed via the LPRT Network beginning Friday at 5 PM CDT.
